Birkirkara face Hibernians in Carlsberg Tournament decider

by Ivan Mizzi - 27th August 2010

On Friday night, Birkirkara and Hibernians will be involved in the last match of the Carlsberg Tournament, and this match will bring this year's tournament to an end.

Both teams are coming from their 1st win on the tournament as on Wednesday, Hibernians registered a massive victory when they easily beat Qormi with a 6-1 score line. In the first half the Paolites were already enjoying a comfortable 4-0 lead. On the other hand, Birkirkara registered a 3-1 win thanks to two goals by captain Michael Galea and one by Emiliano Lattes.

The match between Birkirkara or Hibernians will decide the winner of this tournament as one of them will be the Carlsberg Tournament winner for this year. Both teams have 4 points. It is mathematically impossible for the other two teams to win this tournament as they have 1 point each, with one match to go.

Since both teams are on equal points, the winner will be decided thanks to the score in direct match. If this does not happen then the winner will be the one who scored most. If both teams had scored the same amount of goals, the team who suffered the less amount of goals will be declared the winner. Finally, if these do not decide the winner, drawing of lots will take place to determine the winner of the tournament.

In other words Birkirkara will only win this tournament by beating Hibernians. On the other hand a draw would suffice for Hibernians to be the winners of this cup, since they have a better goal average, and a draw would not change this.

The match will be played in the Hibs Ground and it will start at 21:00.

At the end of the tournament, the winner and the runner up shall be presented with a trophy. A Fair Play trophy shall be presented to the best behaved team as decided by the disciplinary commissioner. A trophy shall also be presented to the player scoring the highest number of goals. If more then one player scores the same number of goals, the greatest number of goals in one match shall be taken into consideration.
