Interview with Paul Fenech

by Ayrton Galea - 22nd December 2010

A few days after Birkirkara managed to beat Hibernians with a 3-1 score, thanks to a five star performance, and a brace by Paul Fenech and another goal by Emiliano Lattes, we decided to talk with the man of the match, Paul Fenech.

We opened the interview by asking Paul about the start of the Premier League, which, as Paul admitted was not very satisfying. "It is a fact that we did not open this campaign in the best way possible but we must take into consideration that we had five players missing due to suspensions, plus some injuries, although I do not consider this as a valid reason because we still have potential players who give their maximum effort when they are included. However, it was still difficult to give our maximum performance when you consider that three or four players which were suspended were the ones who played the majority of the games during last season, so it was not easy to be consistent in our victories.

He added, "Another reason was that in the pre-season, be it training sessions or the actual games, we never played with a full-team. The last match that we were in full strength was the last Premier League match against Valletta. But now, we must leave the past behind us and must concentrate on the next games to continue winning as many matches as possible like we did in the last two games.

Then we turned the page to the last game and we asked the International midfielder to give his thoughts about this game, "In our last game against Hibernians, it was important to win the three points so that we could make sure of our league standings position, and apart from everything it is always nice to finish the year on a positive note. Our performance was good but I feel that we have to improve to be serious challengers for the league title and I am sure that we, the players, will do all that is possible to reach last year's level as soon as possible.

We asked Paul what the brace against Hibernians meant for him and he told us something really interesting, "It was not only my first ever brace with Birkirkara, but in my whole career as this it was the first time I scored two goals and, to be honest I was amazed because it is something rare even to score one goal, let alone two. These goals mean a lot for me because the effort I'm putting into my training is showing on the pitch and is encouraging me to try harder in the game of football, because, ultimately, it is the main aim to score goals. These goals arrived at a good moment as they happened two days before I celebrated my birthday and I shall end this year in a very beautiful way."

We continued our discussion with the International midfielder on how this win shall effect the team's morale and if he thinks that this victory arrived at the best time, just before the game against Valletta. He answered, "Yes, I do believe that this performance increased our morale substantially. In this pause due to the festive weeks, it is a certainty that we will be working hard, analysing in which areas we must improve to be as strong as possible in the game against Valletta."

"The game against Valletta is never easy whatever the situation. Since we are rivals it is always an important match for both sides. I honestly believe that we are going to produce another good performance and we will take something from this game. The most important tactic is that we stay concentrated throughout the whole match"

Paul concluded this interview with a message to all the Birkirkara FC supporters. "I wish to encourage all the supporters to come to the stadium and support us. I must thank you all for your support and for the courage you've been giving us through each match. I take this opportunity to wish everyone all the best for this festive season especially the Birkirkara supporters."
