Godwin McKay Interviewed

by Ayrton Galea - 5th October 2012

After we interviewed Alejandro Mendoza two weeks ago, this week we decided to continue introducing the players that joined us in during Summer Transfer Market and the choice fell on the Under 19 National player, Godwin McKay.

Godwin is one of the youngest players in the squad but still managed to make his debut in the Premier League when he was included as a substitute on the 15 September in the fine 3-0 victory over Floriana. Without any doubt, McKay's talent is evident and his future is very bright.

Who is Godwin McKay?

I was born on 20th July 1995, which means I'm 17 years old. About my character I think I am very friendly but a little bit shy at times. I am confident in what I do and very determined to do well in my career and every other aspect of my life.

How do you spend your regular days?

My life at the moment is all football related. Sometimes I train in the morning, and I always have training in the evening. In between I listen to music, read about nutrition and cooking and play football games on the Playstation.

How do you spend your weekends?

Usually I spend my weekends with my friends and partying. Recently I am skipping the last to focus more on my dreams and goals.

What are your main hobbies besides football?

Cooking and watching movies.

What is your favourite food?

My favourite food would be red meat, like T-bone, rib-eye steaks.

What is your favourite kind of music?

Hip Hop / Rap / RnB

Do you have a favourite quote or motto?

“There is no luck in success. Success is based on hard work and determination to do and give more every day” and “Blame no one, expect nothing, do something.”

Are you superstitious?

No

What are the three things that you cannot live without?

Football, friends and most important of all, my family.

What motivates you most in life?

Family, and success, as in the thrill to play football in front of thousands.

What is your biggest wish?

A wish and my dream is to reach the highest level of football possible in my career.

Do you follow international football? If yes, which is your favourite nation when it comes to football, and which is your favourite club?

Yes, of course I do. Spain because I support Real Madrid.

Who is your favourite player? Why?

Cristiano Ronaldo. He is an all rounder considering his speed and power, and his ball technique and strategy of the game.

What is your biggest fear on the pitch?

On the pitch I have no fears. There are only 3 possible outcomes, win, lose or draw and I play to win. My only concern is injuries, like unfortunately, what happened to my older brother, making him stop from playing the game.

Can you tell us a bit about your experiences before joining our Club?

I started playing football with Pieta FC, and I enjoyed my time there as I won many competitions and leagues there. Then I moved to Mosta FC. I play for the national team of Malta and I gathered lots of experience when playing abroad and representing my country.

Why did you decide to join Birkirkara FC?

After receiving many different offers, I decided to join Birkirkara FC for many reasons. It is a great achievement for me to be part of this successful club at a very young age. Training with many experienced players will make me improve and develop into a better player. One of the main reasons is because of the Club's Head Coach, Mr Paul Zammit. He is professional in his work, a very talented coach with lots of success and winnings behind his name. Also I am very happy to make my debut in the Maltese Premier League.

Being part of a club like Birkirkara FC at this very young age is definitely not an easy task. What do you think was the main factor to succeed so far?

The main factor is that I am striving to do my best here. But of course that's only from my side, from the other side there is a lot of help coming from the players, the coach and everyone at the club. They make me feel welcome here, and that reason allows me to concentrate more on what I do on the pitch, and not how I am going to become part of the team.

Who is your best team mate?

Ryan Camenzuli, as we play together with the national team as well.

What do you think of the setup of the Club?

It is very professional and everyone is very friendly. I like it.

How are you feeling with the Club? Have you settled in?

I am feeling very happy at the moment and yes I believe I'm settling in quite well, special thanks again to everyone.

What would you like to see change in Maltese football?

A change for the better of course. I really would like to see the premier league on professional level some day.

How are you preparing for the next game against Valletta?

Valletta are one of the best teams but that doesn't change anything. We are a good and a valid team and I know its going to be a tough game because the whole team is working for a positive result.

What are your targets and the Club's targets for this season?

My target is to keep working hard, so I will be of contribution to my team. The club targets definitely are to keep winning games and challenge to win the league.

Do you have a message for the supporters?

Of course, a player always hope for the love and support coming constantly from the supporters and I feel that our supporters really believe in us, so my message is to keep coming to the games and keep giving us you support.
