Stripes all out to regain sole leadership

by Ayrton Galea - 8th December 2012

Birkirkara will be aiming to regain sole leadership this afternoon when they will start hot favourites as they take on bottom placed Rabat Ajax.

With Hibernians beating Melita with a very comfortable 5-1 score, the Paolites temporarily moved on top of the table with one game more but ‘The Stripes' could regain sole leadership if they beat the Magpties today in a tricky encounter.

Birkirkara are still fresh from making it to the fourth round of the U*BET FA Trophy when they showed their determined and strong characteristic as they hold on to a 1-0 narrow win over Tarxien Rainbows despite playing for more than half an hour with one player less.

On the other hand, in their Premier League outing Birkirkara suffered a late equaliser to deny them from three deserved points as they were held in a 2-2 draw by Balzan. However, this point was enough to put ‘The Stripes' alone on top of the table as both Hibernians and Valletta were defeated.

Tomorrow opponents' Rabat also boosted their morale in no small way following the third round of the U*BET FA Trophy as a last minute penalty enabled them to make it to the fourth round eliminating 1st Division side, Pieta Hotspurs. In the Premier League Rabat are still searching from their first win. In the last four outings they suffered four defeats after they registered a major surprise as they Valletta in a 1-1 draw.

Yesterday Rabat strengthen their squad with the signing of the former Melita forward, Armario Negrin after they released Nerijus Astrauskas.

Birkirkara who are with 27 points from 13 matches will be all out to pick up the three precious points and move alone on top of the table while Rabat Ajax will try their best not to leave the pitch with empty hands if they are willing to fight against getting relegated back to the First Division.

In the first round clash, Birkirkara scored a goal in each half to beat the Magpties with a 2-0 score thanks to goals by Nikola Vukanac and Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza.

As a sign of respect to Mr. George Micallef, former MFA Council Member and Assistant Treasurer and ex General Manager of the National Stadium, a one minute of silence will be held and flags will be flown at half-mast.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 14:00.

Come on the Stripes!
