Birkirkara to face Qormi in FA Trophy

by Ayrton Galea - 22nd January 2013

High flying Birkirkara will be aiming to keep up their pace tomorrow evening when they will be involved in the fourth round of the U*BET FA Trophy against Qormi.

Birkirkara registered their biggest win of the league last Saturday when they hit Mosta with seven thanks to a magnificent performance. This was a clear warning from the Stripes, after they lost the top of the clash against Valletta with a solitary goal, that the race for the league is far from over.

On the other hand, former Birkirkara striker, Moises Avila Perez scored a spectacular goal for Qormi on the 90th minute, from almost the middle of the field, which enabled his team to turn the match around and beat Tarxien Rainbows with a 2-1 score.

Birkirkara are currently third in the league standings with 36 points, three under leaders Valletta while Qormi are eight with 24 points, 12 under the same Birkirkara. However, these statistics will count for nothing in tomorrow's match as football has a habit to spring surprises. There are no doubt that surprises happen in this competition as shown in various occasions shown in the last years.

Birkirkara advanced to the fourth round by beating Tarxien Rainbows with a solitary goal by Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza, and managed to keep their single goal advantage for the final whistle despite having to play for more than thirty minutes with one player less as Joseph Zerafa was sent off for a double booking.

On the other hand, Qormi eliminated Pembroke with much more difficulty than they probably expected. The score after the 90th minute of regular play was still reading 2-2. Qormi, then, showed their superiority by scoring three goals in the extra time to advance with a 5-2 score.

Birkirkara's task is anything but an easy one, as they need to be at their best in order to eliminate Qormi. In the first round of the league, Abubaker Bello Osagie's goal on the 94th minute denied the Stripes the three points as the match ended with a 1-1 score.

As already mentioned, Joseph Zerafa was sent off in the third round match of this competition, and therefore he is suspended for tomorrow's clash against Qormi.

The winner of this match will face the winner of the match between Premier League side Balzan and 1st Division side, Gzira United.

The match will be played at the Centenary Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 20:00.

Come on the Stripes!
