Stripes to face stern Mosta challenge

by Ayrton Galea - 5th April 2014

Champions Birkirkara FC will be hoping to take another step towards in their title defence, when on Sunday afternoon when they take on Mosta FC.

The Stripes trashed Mosta 4-0 in their last encounter, but this means nothing for Sunday's clash. The Blues have always proved to be a tricky side to beat, and they unbeaten since their last defeat against Birkirkara.

Birkirkara will be heading to this match boosted by the narrow 1-0 victory over Balzan last week. The Stripes had to overcome a difficult obstacle where Balzan's resistance frustrated them for the first seventy minutes. The Stripes showed great attitude and Paul Fenech scored the winning goal just minutes after Joseph Zerafa was sent off.

On the other hand, Mosta will also be coming to this match with confidence, as they are enjoying a five-match unbeaten run. Following the 4-0 defeat against Birkirkara, the Blues managed to hold Valletta and Sliema Wanderers in 2-2 and 1-1 draws respectively, and they managed to beat Balzan with a 4-2 score. In the last match, they shared the spoils in an entertaining 2-2 draw against Hibernians.

While the Stripes will be all out for the three points, Mosta also have much at stake as they are seeking to participate in the UEFA's competitions for the first time.

Both teams will be unable to field their best formation. Birkirkara have Joseph Zerafa suspended after he was sent off in the last match. On the other hand, Mosta FC will be without the services of goalkeeper Omar Borg and forward Bojan Kaljevic, suspended after having collected their fourth yellow card in their last outing against Hibernians FC.

These two teams met threice in the BOV Premier League this season, with all three matches won by the Stripes. In the first two rounds, Birkirkara registered identical 3-1 victories, before trumping them 4-0 in the third round.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 16:00. Transport to the stadium will leave at 15:00 from Valley Road

Come on the Stripes!
