Birkirkara face Floriana in clash for the 2nd place

by Ayrton Galea - 2nd April 2011

On Sunday afternoon Birkirkara will be involved in another important clash for the second place, when they will face Floriana.

Birkirkara's morale is high after they won their last two outings. Three weeks ago 'The Stripes' registered a very comfortable win when they beat Marsaxlokk with a score of 4-1. One week later in a dramatic match, Birkirkara eliminated Sliema Wanderers from the U*BET FA Trophy with a score of 6-4 with the penalty shoot-out having to decide the winner.

Like Birkirkara, tomorrow's opponents Floriana advanced to the semi-finals of the U*BET FA Trophy be eliminating Qormi also after a penalty shoot-out. On the other hand, in their last Premier League match they were defeated by Valletta with a score of 3-0.

Many consider that Floriana is Birkirkara's boogey team. However statistics show different as in these last ten seasons, 'The Stripes' beat Floriana no less than 20 times. On the other hand 'The Greens' beat Birkirkara 8 times. Six times the game ended in a draw. In total Birkirkara scored 51 goals and suffered 27 goals which mean 24 goals in favor of Birkirkara.

Without any doubt the best season for Birkirkara against Floriana was the 2004-2005 season when 'The Stripes' beat Floriana four times in a row, scoring 11 and conceding just one goal. On the other hand, Floriana's best season against Birkirkara was the previous season. In the 2003-2004 season Floriana and Birkirkara won two games each and in total they scored and conceded four goals.

This season these two teams met twice in the Premier League. In the first round Floriana managed to beat the present champions with a score of 2-0. In the second round it was the turn of 'The Stripes' to beat Floriana as they won the game thanks to a solitary goal by Patrick Borg.

For tomorrow's match Mr. Paul Zammit has to do without the services of the same Patrick Borg, and Michael Fraser, who are both injured. As announced by this website last Monday, Manuel Bartolo's suspension was revoked, which means that he is available for this match

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it will start at 15:00. Transport from Valley Road is available and it will leave at 14:00.

Come on the Stripes!
