Birkirkara and Sliema to contest AME Cup finalby Ayrton Galea - 5th August 2012
This evening Birkirkara will face Sliema Wanderers in the final of the AME Cup, and Birkirkara will aim to maintain their perfect winning streak in this competition.
Last Thursday, Birkirkara continued to impress and thanks to another wonderful performance by the squad. They eliminated Mosta with a 2-0 score, thanks to a brace by Joselito Dos Reis who scored his seventh goal in the competition from just four matches. This was the fourth win in a row following beating Sliema Wanderers, Qormi and Rabat Ajax respectively in the group phase.
On the other hand, Sliema Wanderers bounced back from the 4-2 defeat against Birkirkara in the first match of the competition as they then beat Rabat Ajax and Qormi 4-0 and 3-0 respectively. In the other semi-final, also played last Thursday, Sliema Wanderers eliminated Balzan Youths with a 4-2 score in a penalty shoot-out, after the match finished in a draw of 1-1.
As mentioned earlier, this will be the second time that these two teams will face each other in this competition. Birkirkara and Sliema kicked off the AME Cup, and Birkirkara recovered from an early two-goal disadvantage to beat Sliema with a result of 4-2.
The outcome of this match will obviously determine the winner of the AME Cup. However, it will most probably also determine the top scorer of this competition. Those present will keep an eye on the teams' best scorers. Joselito Dos Reis for Birkirkara, is also the current top scorer of the competition with seven goals. Sliema Wanderers' top scorer Omar El Ghaouti with five goals in this competition is in the second place.
After signing Jhonnattann Da Conceicao earlier this week, Birkirkara are still aiming to strengthen the team even more. Central back defenders Alejandro Mendoza and Jusselio Donizete are still on trial with our Club.
The match will be played at the Luxol Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 20:30.
Come on the Stripes.
