Birkirkara to face Hamrun in Tivoli Cup

by Ayrton Galea - 7th August 2012

This Friday Birkirkara will face Hamrun Spartans in the second edition of the Tivoli Cup.

Both teams were involved in the AME Cup in the past two weeks, but their performances and results were totally different.

Birkirkara won the first edition of the AME Cup when in a hard fought final, they managed to come from behind to defeat Sliema Wanderers with a 2-1 score. Birkirkara opened their competition commitments by taking top spot in the group phase by beating Sliema Wanderers with a 4-2 score, Qormi with a 3-2 score and Rabat with a 4-1 score. In the semi finals, they managed to beat Mosta with a 2-0 score. Joselito Dos Reis won the top scorer award after scoring eight goals in five matches.

On the other hand, Hamrun Spartans disappointed and failed to reach their expectations as they ended in the seventh position from the eight teams participating. In the group phase, they were beaten by Mosta with a 3-1 score and by Tarxien Rainbows on penalties and were then held by Balzan in a 3-3 draw. In their last match to determine the seventh and eight positions, Hamrun managed to beat Qormi in a highly entertaining match with a 4-3 score.

Birkirkara will be a depleted side as all the players that forms part of the Under 21 and the Senior National Teams will be unavailable for this match. These players are Ryan Camenzuli, Ryan Scicluna and Rowen Muscat for the Under 21 National Team and Paul Fenech, Gareth Sciberras and Reuben Gauci for the Senior National Team.

Last season Birkirkara and Hamrun Spartans met three times, twice in the Premier League and once in the U*BET FA Trophy. Birkirkara won the two league matches with a comfortable 4-0 and 3-1 scores but Hamrun Spartans managed to eliminate ‘The Stripes' in the fourth round of the U*BET FA Trophy in a dramatic 3-2 match.

The match will be played at the Victor Tedesco Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 19:30. Donations of €5 will be collected at the door, and all donors will take part in a lottery for a flat screen TV.

Come on the Stripes!
