Birkirkara aim to keep momentum

by Ayrton Galea - 23rd November 2012

Birkirkara will be aiming to maintain their place on top of the table when they will face Balzan Youths this evening.

With Valletta dropping points week after week, Birkirkara made the best of the situation and thanks to two consecutive victories over Mosta and Melita they moved to the top of the table with Valletta on equal points.

For ‘The Stripes' are unbeaten in their last four matches, as their last defeat goes back to the 19 October when they were defeated with a 3-1 score by Hamrun Spartans.

On the other hand, following a shaky start, Balzan are going through a very positive patch in the Premier League. In fact they were unbeaten in their last seven matches. They registered five wins and two draws in their last seven outings as they defeated Qormi, Melita and Sliema Wanderers, before they held Mosta in a goal-less draw and Valletta in a 1-1 draw. Then, in their last two outings they notched two victories over Rabat Ajax and Hamrun Spartans. Their last defeat goes back to 23 September when they were defeated with a 3-2 score by Hibernians.

Without any doubt, with Balzan's morale sky high, this will be a very difficult task for ‘The Stripes' who surely need to be at their best to beat ‘The Youths'. Also, Birkirkara are aware of Balzan's tough style of play. In the first round league match between these two teams, Birkirkara won with a 2-1 score in a hard-fought match, but they lost two important players namely Shola Shodiya and Joselito Dos Reis due to injury on the pitch. Joselito is still suffering the consequences of that match.

Birkirkara are first with 26 points and a win for ‘The Stripes' will put them alone on top of the table with three points clear, but with Valletta having a game in hand. On the other hand, a win for Balzan would temporarily put them in the fourth place with 21 points, level with Sliema Wanderers, Mosta and Tarxien.

Edward Herrera will be back for ‘The Stripes' following a two match ban.

The match will be played at the Victor Tedesco Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 20:15. Transport from Valley Road will leave at 19:15.

Come on the Stripes!
