Birkirkara and Valletta in top of the table clash

by Ayrton Galea - 11th January 2013

Sole leadership will be at stake tomorrow afternoon when in the much awaited top of the table clash, joint leaders Birkirkara and Valletta will cross swords, in the match that always bring out the best of both sets of supporters.

Kicking off their arch rivalry in the late 1990's, matches between Birkirkara and Valletta always attracted numerous supporters to the stadium and tomorrow's clash should be not an exception as the joint-leaders will be aiming to take sole leadership of the BOV Premier League.

Boosted by the emphatic display against Tarxien Rainbows, ‘The Stripes' will seek another solid performance in order to maintain their title aspirations. The Yellow-Reds have the current best unbeaten streak in this Premier league, as their last defeat goes back to the 19 October when they were defeated by Hamrun Spartans. Following this defeat, Birkirkara registered four wins and five draws with the Tarxien's match being the ninth undefeated match for the title contenders.

On the other hand, ‘The Citizens' also took a deep breath last week as they made the best out of the Hibernians' rear guard mistakes to punish them with a 4-1 score and move back on top of the table following unconvincing patches. This was Valletta's first victory in three matches after they were shocked by a 2-1 defeat against amateur side Melita and held in a 1-1 draw against newly promoted Rabat Ajax.

Decisive might not be the best word to describe tomorrow's clash as the Premier League is still in its second round, but it is definitely not a secret that both teams will be doing their best in aim not to leave the stadium with empty hands.

Both coaches, Mr. Paul Zammit for Birkirkara and Mr. Mark Miller for Valletta will have a slight headache to choose their formations. For ‘The Stripes', Ryan Camenzuli is suspended after having collected his fourth yellow card, while Joselito Dos Reis is still unavailable due to injury. On the other hand, Valletta have Manuel Bartolo, Ryan Fenech and Demba Toure suspended, the latter for failing to undergo a medical test.

The balanced first round match saw the two teams sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 16:00. Transport from Valley Road will leave at 15:00.

We would like to urge all the Club's supporters to come to the stadium and support our beloved team.

Come on the Stripes!
