Match Preview: Birkirkara FC vs. Gzira United FC

by Ayrton Galea - 5th January 2018

Birkirkara FC will be seeking to extend their string of positive results in the BOV Premier League this evening, when they will take on one of the main contenders, Gzira United FC.

In the big match of matchday 15, Birkirkara and Gzira United will be aiming to continue where they left in the previous year and extend their positive form. The Stripes will be going to this match all-out to keep improving their position while the Maroons will be seeking to remain in the top places.

The Stripes have ended last year on the most positive note as they won three consecutive victories while booking their place in the fourth round of the FA Trophy, when they will start as favourites when they will take on San Gwann FC.

Despite winning maximum points in their last three outings, the Stripes are still occupying the eighth place. However, they have trimmed the gap with Sliema Wanderers FC and Hibernians FC respectively to just two points, with Hamrun Spartans FC having one point less than the two sides.

On the other hand, Gzira United FC have enjoyed a very satisfactory league campaign so far. They are just one-point away from leaders Balzan FC as they are sharing the second place with Valletta FC with thirty-points from the first fourteen matches.

After losing to Sliema Wanderers FC in the league, and eliminated by Hamrun Spartans FC in the FA Trophy, the Maroons registered back-to-back victories as they defeated Valletta FC with a 2-1 score and Lija Athletic FC with a 3-2 score in their last match.

The Stripes are so far among the most active teams in strengthening their squad as they have acquired the services of goalkeeper Krstijan Naumovski, defender Fernando Barbosa and offensive player Srdjan Dimitrov. All players are in-line to make their first appearance.

Both teams have two players suspended as Cain Attard and Nikola Vukanac are suspended for the Stripes, while Gzira must do without Amadou Samb and Roderick Briffa.

The match will be played at the Centenary Stadium and it will kick off at 19:00. Transport from Valley Road will leave at 17:45.

Come on the Stripes!
