Birkirkara aiming for precious points

by Ayrton Galea - 5th May 2012

Birkirkara are hoping to build on the performance displayed in their last match, when tomorrow, with a depleted side, they will face Sliema Wanderers.

Birkirkara did what many would have considered as impossible, when with just nine men on the field, after Rowen Muscat and Nikola Vukanac were sent off, they managed to beat Hibernians with a 2-0 score. This win lifted Birkirkara's morale, after they had been defeated in their previous two outings.

Tomorrow's opponents, Sliema, are probably considered the team that disappointed most in the Championship Pool, as they are still searching for their first win. In eight matches they managed to win only three points thanks to three draws, two against Balzan Youths and one against Birkirkara.

So far, these two teams met three times in the Premier League with Birkirkara still searching for their first win over 'The Blues'. In the first two rounds, Sliema managed to defeat Birkirkara with a 1-0 score while in the third round, both teams shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

After thirty matches, Birkirkara are fourth with 32 points, one point under Floriana who will have a difficult match this evening against Valletta. On the other hand, Sliema Wanderers are fifth, 11 points behind Birkirkara and three points ahead of Balzan.

Birkirkara will be a depleted side for this match as they have no less than five players, that is Angus Buhagiar, Nikola Vukanac, Rodrigo Pereira, Rowen Muscat and Shaun Bajada, suspended. Jorge Santos Silva will in all probability not recover in time from his injury. However, Paul Fenech should be back for Birkirkara.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 17:00. Transport from Valley Road will leave at 16:00.

Come on the Stripes!
