by Ayrton Galea - 12th June 2014

Birkirkara FC held its Annual General Meeting for season 2013-2014 last Monday evening at the Clubhouse.

Club's President Joe Zammit opened the meeting by welcoming the club members to the AGM.

This was followed with the reading of the minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting by the Club's Secretary, Jason Deguara. The minutes were approved by the Club's members.

The administrative report for Season 2013-14 was presented by the Secretary, Jason Deguara. The report mentioned the success of the Club during the past season namely the winning of the BOV Super Cup by the Senior Team, the winning of the Women's Knockout by the Women's Team, the winning of the Youths League Section A of the Under-19's Team and the double won by the Under-15's Team. The report was approved by the members.

Club's Treasurer Ivan Mizzi presented the financial report, which was also approved by the members.

Mr. Godwin Falzon of the audit firm Falzon & Falzon was confirmed as the Club's Auditor for another year.

Youth Academy Project

Ivan Mizzi, in his other role as CEO of Birkirkara FC Youth Nursery presented the report of the Nursery. Financially, it was a positive year for the Nursery. It was a year of mixed results. On one hand there was the disappointment of the Under 17's team being relegated to Section B. On the other, the Under 15 team won the League and was promoted to Section A, and also won the Knock-out.

The committee had decided to help directly with the running of the Nursery, and appointed a committee member as the CEO of the Nursery to have a direct link. As more time passes, the plan is to integrate even further the Nursery with the parent Club.

The CEO went to say that the future looks bright for the Nursery, and that there are a lot of changes in the pipeline. Work has already started for next season, which kicked-off with appointing Mr Mark Bondin as the new Director of Youth Coaching, commonly referred to as the Nursery's Head Coach. Some new coaches were brought in, and some others were retained. Coaches for all age groups for the new season have all been appointed. The Nursery will also have its own Nutrionist, Physical Trainer, and goalkeepers' coach. The existing gymnasium will also be upgraded in the coming weeks.

The competitive teams, that is the U15 and U17, will have a stronger technical team setup, to help prepare them for Senior Team football, which is the ultimate aim of the Nursery.

Due to personal reasons, Mr. Jason Deguara resigned from his position but confirmed that he will be still be giving a hand to the committee. Mr. Deguara was elected first as the secretary of the Club in the in the 2011-2012 season.

President's Speech

Club's President Mr. Joseph Zammit started his speech by giving a quick roundup of last year, where he mentioned all the hard work done by the committee and all the positive things that happened during the last season. However, he admits, that all the work was dashed inside the two minutes of the last game of the league.

Team Manager Mr. Mario Gatt has decided not to continue in his position with our Club. Mr. Gatt, who is a synonymous name for Birkirkara following his long-time service to the Club. The Club would like to thank Mr. Gatt for all his voluntary work with our beloved club.

The club will be strengthening its technical staff with a new general manager and a physical trainer in the coming days.

The Club is working hard to avoid mistakes that occurred last season and give a stronger challenge to all the domestic honours. Having said that, he continued by saying that Youth Academy products would still be the Club's first choice, wherever it is possible.

Mr. Zammit made it clear that the committee has already started their preparations for the UEFA Europa League commitments where the Club will be seeking to advance to the next round of the competition. However, he made it a point that everyone should keep his feet on the ground.

The President made a reference to the Nursery's product, Rowen Muscat as he is presently the spotlight of attention in the Maltese media. Rowen, whose contract expired at the end of May, is seeking to continue his football career abroad and he is on the verge of signing to a foreign team. Mr. Zammit said that the committee gives total support to the Club's players and Rowen was no exception. The committee is helping in every possible way to make this dream come true for the National midfielder.

He confirmed that defensive trio of Nikola Vukanac, Alejandro Mendoza and Matheus Bissi are confirmed with the squad while the committee is still negotiating and keeping all options open on the attacking trio of Shola Shodiya, Frank Temile and Jhonnattann Benites. The President also mentioned new foreign players that are set to join our Club on trial in the coming days.

Finally, the president thanked all those present for attending and all of those who help the Club in one way or another, and augured a very positive 2014-2015 season.
