Birkirkara to face Qormi in Premier League opening

by Ayrton Galea - 19th August 2011

The 2011-2012 BOV Premier League will kick-off this afternoon, when in the first scheduled match, Birkirkara will face Qormi.

After the disappointment of the previous season, Birkirkara mage major changes in all sectors of the Club , including the committee, the technical team and in the squad.

Birkirkara FC released all the foreign players it had on its book last season, which were Michael Fraser, Nikola Vukanac, Rodolfo Kumbrevicius, Ibrahim Babatunde and Emiliano Lattes. International defender Andrei Agius returned to Italy after his loan with our club expired in June 30.

Birkirkara opened the transfer campaign with the signing of the Under 21 International winger Leighton Grech. Goalkeeper Jorge Mora returned with our Club after having a most successful spell in the 2009-2010 season. Many consider Birkirkara FC's acquisition of the International midfielder, Gareth Sciberras, as the biggest one for the Club in this transfer season. After last season he was on loan from Gudja United, the Under 21 international striker Terence Vella, agreed terms with Birkirkara to join the Club on a five year deal.

Birkirkara signed another two other foreigners, Brazilian defender Rodrigo Pereira and Spanish striker Moises Avila Perez who both left a very good impression in their trial and were offered a one year contract with an option of extending it for another year.

Andreas Galea, Patrick Borg and Andrew Scicluna were loaned out to St. Patricks, Marsaxlokk and Mqabba respectively. Thomas Paris and Karl Pulo were transferred to Floriana and Tarxien Rainbows.

For this first match Mr. Patrick Curmi cannot count on the service of the two international midfielders Paul Fenech and Shaun Bajada who both are ruled out injured

The match will be played at the Ta' Qali National Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 18:30. Transport from Valley Road is available and it will leave at 17:30.

The long journey of the Premier League begins here, and the players are in need of your support!
