Birkirkara face Sliema in the Premier League

by Ayrton Galea - 13th September 2010

Tonight, Birkirkara and Sliema Wanderers will be involved in their first match of this new 2010-2011 league which will see both teams battling for their first three points.

Both teams have made drastic changes to their squads, which means that all the results between these two teams in last season cannot be taken as an indication to what might happen. Several new players will be making the Premier League debut with their respective club.

This Summer, Birkirkara released Jorge Mora and Sylvano Comvalius. Carlo Mamo returned to Marsaxlokk after a five months spell on loan basis with 'The Stripes'. Goalkeeper Omar Borg was loaned out to Hamrun Spartans and veteran Branko Nisevic decided to retire from a player to concentrate on his coaching career.

Birkirkara made no less than six acquisitions. They registered two new goalkeepers for one year. Brazilian goalkeeper Esequiel Lovizon, and Manuel Bartolo on a loan basis from Msida St. Joseph. Emiliano Lattes and Ryan Harding are the other new foreigners for the 'Stripes' besides Nikola Vukanac who extended his stay with the Stripes for another season. Andrew Decesare and Terence Vella were the Maltese acquisitions for Birkirkara.

Defending the title is not an easy task as all teams give their maximum effort to beat the Champions. One week ago, Andrew Decesare had given us his views about defending the title and his comments were, "Everyone will try their best to beat the current champions. What we can do, and I can say we are doing already, is to work as a team so we may have a good chance of bringing the cup down to Valley Road once again"

Birkirkara will be going through this match with no less than five players ruled out suspended as Shaun Bajada, Paul Fenech, Nikola Vukanac and Patrick Borg are suspended due to the incidents that occured after the match of Super Cup final, while Karl Pulo is suspended for being sent off in the same match.

The match will be played in the National stadium and it is scheduled to start at 19:30. Transport from Valley Road is available and will leave at 18:30.

Come on Stripes!
